In-Person Workshop on Friday 5th August & Saturday 6th August 2022
Spend two inspirational and playful days with me, in my new studio space in Woodbridge, Suffolk, creating a fun and colourful textile artwork. I will guide you to create a collage from painted and dyed repurposed fabrics, piecing and layering to make a fantasy landscape with fabric and stitch. I will show you how I consider composition and use colour to create interest and depth. Working with materials and threads from my own stash you will enjoy creating your own dreamscape textile artwork.
Day 1 will be all about the preparation and colouring of materials. This is a fun, experimental and playful day, learning about my favourite dyeing techniques, dip-dyeing and ice-dyeing, colouring with acrylic paint and inks, mark making and simple printing with found objects and plant material. Working with fabrics from my collection of vintage and preloved textiles, you will prepare and colour your own collection of fabrics using the techniques mentioned above. At the end of the day, you will have a “stash” of individual and unique materials to use on day 2.
Day 2 is all about creating your collage, auditioning fabrics, cutting and tearing them into shapes to piece together to form a fantasy landscape. Once the background collage is stitched in place you will add colour and texture with simple stitches made in a playful and intuitive way.
You will end the day with your own collage to take home and finish stitching at your leisure. You will have information about how to finish and mount your work ready for framing. You will also have your unused dyed fabric and leftover scraps from the workshop to use in future work.
All materials and equipment will be provided but you may prefer to bring your own basic sewing kit with scissors, pins, needles and thimble. As you may be using dye or paint, please bring an apron and rubber or latex gloves to protect your clothes and hands from staining.
A knowledge of basic hand sewing technique is needed for this workshop. ( running stitch, tacking/basting and backstitch)
Tea and coffee will be provided along with a simple vegetarian lunch.
This is a small workshop with a maximum of 3 attendees.
Workshop runs from 9.45 to 4.30 on both days
