In-Person Workshop on Friday 15th July 2022
Spend a creative and fun day with me, in my new studio space in Woodbridge, Suffolk, making a textile artwork featuring vintage napkins or doilies. I will show you how I consider composition and build up the piece from repurposed fabrics. You will dip-dye a doily or napkin and assemble a collage and/or add paint to your own design and finally adding stitch for texture and interest.
I will demonstrate how I go about dyeing and painting vintage textiles before you start working on your own piece. You will colour a napkin or a doily with dye and acrylic paint and ink, building up a background to stitch on. Once the painted background is stitched in place on backing calico you can add more colour and texture with embroidery stitches made in a playful and intuitive way. I will demonstrate the stitches that I use regularly and how I make my thread choices.
You will end the day with your own original and unique landscape to take home and finish stitching at your leisure. You will have information about how to finish and mount your work ready for framing.
All materials and equipment will be provided but you may prefer to bring your own basic sewing kit with scissors, pins, needles and thimble. As you may be using dye or paint, please bring an apron and rubber or latex gloves to protect your clothes and hands from staining.
A knowledge of basic hand sewing technique is needed for this workshop. ( running stitch, tacking/basting and backstitch)
Tea and coffee will be provided along with a simple vegetarian lunch.
This is a small workshop with a maximum of 4 attendees.
